Conference on Occupational Safety & Health (COSH) 2012

2012 THEMES – OSH Transformation: An Essential Investment

Establishing a safe and healthy work environment requires fundamental changes in the ways work is designed and personnel are deployed, and how the very culture of the organization understands and acts on safety. These changes require leadership capable of transforming not just a physical environment, but also the beliefs and practices of those who create the risk and those who work with the risk.

Managements who are responsible for the safety and health at the workplace can change the attitude of safety and health of their employees by ensuring an annual budget for safety training to help prevent work-related accidents because accidents do not just happen as they are caused and as such they can be prevented.

New research commissioned by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Europe’s leading body for health and safety professionals, has linked investment in safety professionals with reduction in accident rates.

Providing quality training is clearly one of the areas that can help reduce accidents and occupational ill health. Managers and supervisors at all workplaces would need to know how to identify hazards, assess and control risks emanating from work. They need to understand the health and safety procedures, how to manage safety and health and be provided with training in specific processes.

Workplace accidents and diseases impact on the quality of life and on family members as well as the community at large. The concept of investment in occupational safety and health also takes into consideration the elements of workplace wellness and total health promotion programme to secure the health and well-being of the employees.

Making the workplace safe is a joint responsibility of both the employers and the employees. It is no longer possible to merely provide work instructions to employees without supplementing them with the appropriate education and training to help them understand the rationale for minimizing risks to their safety and health.

As employees must be assured of their rights to a safe and healthy work environment, there is a need to provide information, education and training to the employees so that they know best how to protect themselves. Thus, training of employees is the key to achieving a successful safety programme and management must be committed to invest in safety.
