KULAIJAYA: Three people, one of them a Cambodian tourist, suffered serious injuries while 22 others had minor cuts after the express bus they were travelling in lost control and plunged into a drain.
According to passenger S. Parvathy, 26, the accident occurred at about 4.40am at KM19 along the Ayer Hitam-Johor Baru stretch yesterday, minutes after the bus had passed the Kulai toll plaza.
Parvathy who was seated near the entrance of the vehicle said: “I had just called my brother to tell him where I was and minutes later, the bus swerved violently, hitting a divider and plunged into the drain.”
“I crashed through the front window and hit my head against some rocks. A man helped me up,” she said at Hospital Sultanah Aminah.
She said several other passengers were also thrown out of the vehicle.
Parvathy, who sustained head injuries, claimed the bus driver was speeding.
Factory worker D. Kanageswaran, 30, said the bus rammed into the divider and “the next thing I knew, I was lying outside the bus”.
“I quickly got up and started searching for my wife and mother.
“They were trapped inside the bus and I quickly kicked open one of the windows and pulled both of them out,” he said.
He said the police and Fire and Rescue Department arrived very soon after.
He also claimed the driver was speeding.
Johor Baru (North) deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Akhir Ishak said the police were questioning the 45-year-old bus driver.
“We are investigating the case as reckless driving under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act,” he said, adding that all the passengers were sent to the Hospital Sultanah Aminah for treatment.
He said the Cambodian tourist broke his left leg in the accident.
