KAJANG: Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) awareness should be made part of a safe school programme, said Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Lam, chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), said schools must be regarded as both a place for learning and a workplace.
"The subject of safe schools should not be confined to issues such as indiscipline, bullying, gangster-like behaviour, crime and threats to students' safety.

"Matters such as the safety of school buildings, classrooms, equipment and amenities should also be included," said Lee at the launch of the OSH in School programme at SK Taman Rakan, Kajang, recently.
He said the programme was intended to raise awareness among teachers and students about the importance of OSH in schools.
Lee said OSH awareness should be instilled at an early age because students were the nation's future workforce. He said it would contribute towards making safety at work a part of the Malaysian way of life.

He said it would also promote greater awareness of potential safety and health hazards in schools and make it easier to deal with them.
Lee noted that the government had introduced programmes such as the School Health Programme in 1967 and Safe School Project in 2002.
However, the programmes are focused primarily on improving health and making schools safe from social ills and negative external influences such as drug addiction, gangsterism and crime.

"The OSH in School programme covers another dimension and views schools as a workplace, in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994. The act covers all industries employing 'persons at work' and 'others'," added Lee.
"In the case of schools, the working people are teachers, administrative and other support staff, while the 'others' are those affected by activities of the working people, who would primarily be students."

memang diakui masih ramai yang tidak mengetahui berhubung keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan.
Agreed. Enrolling to oshacampus program and other health and safety courses can help different kinds of workplace achieve a great day to day operation with any kind of hazard for them and their workers.
Increase knowledge of safety at work.
